Overview

Welcome to Spirit Island, a cooperative board game where you'll join forces with other spirits to defend your island home against invading colonizers. In this game, you'll work together to protect the island, its inhabitants, and the natural world from the encroaching forces of European colonization. By combining your unique abilities and powers, you'll create a formidable defense against the invaders.

What's in the Box

When you open the Spirit Island box, you'll find a beautiful, illustrated world that sets the stage for your adventure. Inside, you'll discover the following components: a large, foldable board featuring the island, a deck of spirit cards with unique abilities, a deck of invader cards with different types of colonizers, resource tokens, and a set of victory point tokens. The box also includes a comprehensive rulebook to guide you through the game.

Setting Up

To begin, place the island board in the center of the playing area. Shuffle the spirit deck and deal one spirit card to each player. Each player chooses a spirit and places their spirit token on the corresponding island space. Shuffle the invader deck and draw a set number of invader cards, depending on the number of players. Place these invader tokens on the board to indicate their presence on the island. Determine the starting player randomly.

How to Play

A turn in Spirit Island consists of several phases: Action, Invaders, and Resolve. During the Action phase, each player takes two actions: they can either use their spirit's ability, move their spirit token, or take a resource token. In the Invaders phase, the invaders move closer to the island's core, and new invader tokens are drawn and placed on the board. Finally, in the Resolve phase, the players resolve any conflicts between their spirits and the invaders, using their abilities to drive the invaders back or protect the island.

Winning the Game

The game ends when the island is fully colonized, or when the players have successfully defended the island for a set number of rounds. If the island is fully colonized, the players lose. If the players have successfully defended the island, they win and earn victory points. The game also features a "Spirit of the Island" mechanism, where players can earn bonus victory points for completing specific objectives, such as protecting sacred sites or driving away invaders.

Tips for Beginners

As a beginner, it's essential to understand the unique abilities of each spirit and how they can work together to defend the island. Start by learning the basics of each spirit's power and how to use them effectively in different situations. Communication is key in Spirit Island, so be sure to discuss your plans with your fellow players to create a cohesive strategy. Don't be afraid to experiment and try new approaches – Spirit Island is a game that rewards creativity and adaptability.
